Join The Cobras

The Cardiff Cobras are always looking for new players to join the club. Please contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , speak to any member of the team (we're often out and about at the Uni wearing our club shirts) or contact us via twitter or facebook.

Frequently Asked Questions :-

"Am I eligible to play for the team?"

As part of the BUCS programme, we are bound by BUCS rules on eligibility. Essentially if you are a student at Cardiff University, it's almost certain that you will qualify. If you have any doubt, please see Regulation 7 of the BUCS rules at www.bucs.org.uk/rules

If you don't meet the eligibility requirements, but are still interested, it is possible you can help the club in other ways, and in addition, we will be delighted to point you in the direction of other teams who you would be able to play for, so please do get in touch.

"What equipment do I need?"

The equipment needed to play American Football is expensive and highly specialised. As such, while you are welcome to purchase your own helmet and shoulder pads (and some members do), you will never be expect to do so, and the team will provide you with these. All you will need initially is a pair of boots suitable for grass (rugby or football boots will be fine), boots suitable for 3G surfaces, trainers and a gumshield. Other equipment can be purchased via the club, and we will assist in ensuring you get the correct equipment for the position you will play.

"What if I've never played the sport before"

Much as we'd love to be able to recruit a bunch of experienced players every year, the fact is that the vast majority of students joining the Cobras have never played American Football before (at least not without an XBox!). Our experienced coaching staff will teach you safe technique and the rules of the game, turning you into an American Football player in double quick time, and hopefully you'll never stop learning and improving. If you're prepared to listen, prepared to put in the hard graft of training, and you have the desire to win, you will be rewarded by being able to compete as a team player in one of the greatest sports the University has to offer.

"How often do you train?"

We train regularly twice a week (3 times if there is no game), usually on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with a match on Sundays. Mid-Week sessions are usually at the Cardiff University Sports training Village at Talybont, with Sundays at Llanrumney, although this is of course subject to change. We usually have a mini-bus available to assist with transport. In addition the team meet often for gym sessions.

"How far can I progress in the sport?"

How far would you like to progress? The Cobras have a very long history of producing players that have gone on to bigger things. Many players, even in the current team, play senior level football in the UK during the summer, and some have been fortunate to play at a European level as a result. In addition, there are both GB Students and GB Seniors teams, and we are proud to say that a number of students have been part of both of these teams over the years. Also, a great number of Cobras have taken the time to obtain BAFCA coaching qualifications over the years and gone on to coach the team, and we have had ex team members go on to coach at university/college level around the UK and the USA, as well as senior level in the UK and Europe. If you become good enough, it's not impossible to go on to play at NCAA level or theoretically beyond in the USA.
